Wynwood

The Wynwood Arts District, aka Wynwood, is the hub of the Miami's emerging Arts community. It is located just of downtown Miami, roughly bounded by I-95 the west; 20th Street to the south; 36th Street to the north, and North Miami Ave to the east. Wynwood's immediate neighbor to the north is the Miami Design District.

Wynwood is home to over 50 Art Galleries, numerous art venues such as the Bakehouse Art Complex and world-famous Margulies and Rubell Family collections, as well as over 100 local artists. The open configuration of the former industrial buildings are excellent for modern Loft Space.  This type of space is attracting many creative-industry companies to move in the area. Restaurants and cafes are opening and the area is on its way to becoming a 24/7 neighborhood.

The Wynwood Walls

The Wynwood Walls Fifteen influential artists from Asia, Europe, Latin America and the United States have been invited to create outdoor murals on the warehouse walls of Miami’s Wynwood Art District. Tony Goldman of Goldman Properties, one of the major property owners in Wynwood, has made available a group of walls and buildings for artists to work on, concentrated in the area between 2nd and 5th Avenues and NW 22nd and 28th Streets. The project also includes an indoor space at 2550 NW 2nd Avenue where paintings by several of the artists will be exhibited and Martha Cooper will create an on the spot exhibition of her photographs documenting the murals in progress.

The Wynwood Arts District Association (WADA) was founded in early 2003. The Association publishes an annual brochure with a Map and a list of the Association's members See  website.

History

Wynwood is home to one of the largest Puerto Rican enclaves in Miami. Wynwood is also referred to as "Little San Juan", and commonly known as "El Barrio". Puerto Rican owned restaurants, shops, markets and other businesses align the streets of Wynwood. Puerto Rican culture and social activity is centered in Wynwood. In recent years, many Puerto Ricans have been moving to more affluent areas of Miami such as Kendall and Coral Gables due to socioeconomic success in the past years. The Wynwood Puerto Rican population is dwindling and being replaced by Central Americans, especially people from Honduras. Gentrification is also taking place in Wynwood and many expensive condominiums are being built, replacing the mom and pop shops, as well as homes.
